Chiropractic Care For Your Asthma

The prevalence of asthma has increased significantly over the last several decades. The number of new cases of asthma has gone up by more than 60 percent since 1980, and today, more than 25 million Americans are affected by this condition. It particularly affects children, and is now the leading chronic condition among children in this country. The exact reason why asthma has become so prevalent is unknown, but there are some theories.

Theories on the Rise of Asthma

The leading theory on the rapid growth of asthma in this country is called the “hygiene hypothesis.” This hypothesis says that the increase in the cleanliness of living conditions in the United States has had a detrimental impact on our immune systems. Without strong immune systems, children are more susceptible to developing allergies, asthma, and other autoimmune disorders. However, research indicates that this theory is not reason alone for the rise of asthma. Another theory suggests that it could be connected with the higher use of acetaminophen in children; a recent study connected the use of acetaminophen during infancy with a higher risk of developing asthma symptoms. Additionally, a sedentary lifestyle may have an impact on lung health, which in turn, increases the risk of asthma development. Lung growth may also be affected by the widespread deficiency of vitamin D among Americans. Finally, some scientists believe that the use of household spray cleaners and air fresheners may irritate the lungs, increasing the risk of adult asthma. Regardless of the exact cause, the prevalence of asthma is a serious issue, and the proper treatment of this condition needs to be prioritized.

Treatment of Asthma

Traditionally, the symptoms of asthma are managed with the use of a rescue inhaler. A controller inhaler is also prescribed for preventative purposes. If the case is very severe, a long-acting inhaler and oral steroids may also be prescribed by a doctor. However, new research shows that these medications may have a detrimental impact on those who take them. Therefore, more and more people are looking for alternative treatments for their asthma that don’t involve drugs.

Research on Chiropractic and Asthma

Several research studies have been conducted that indicate that chiropractic could be an effective treatment for asthma. In one intensive case study by Dr. William Amalu of a 12 year old boy, he went from taking an oral medication twice a day and three different inhalers several times a day to no medication needed whatsoever with the use of a chiropractor. Another study of 81 asthmatic children found that there was an improvement in the symptoms of 90 percent of participants with chiropractic care, with a 50 percent reduction in asthma attacks. While more research must be done on the connection, these studies indicate that chiropractic could have a positive impact on asthma symptoms.
